Today i’m having my very first tea hot tea with hops. I’ve had kombucha beer before, courtesy of Unity Vibration, but never hops by itself in a tisane. I’m very curious (and cautious). Well, now i can check that one off my list too.
Rest Assured by Light of Day Organics is very herbal. In aroma i really can’t even tell you what’s in it except maybe chamomile and/or lavender. The spent tisane is a bit stronger in scent: mostly wet hops and chamomile. In actuality Rest Assured is made from 100% organic, and at least partially biodynamic rosehips, chamomile, catnip, hops, raspberry leaves, green rooibos and stevia. So wow, not just an herbal tisane–it has rooibos (in the world of tea, rooibos is kind of its own category).
Great, so how does it taste? Oh woman, i wish i could describe it better. There’s just so many overlapping and interweaving flavors, it’s a little confounding to describe. I do get a strong sense of chamomile and rosehips, but there are also notes of hops and the rooibos smooths things out a tad. But also, i think its the catnip that gives it a slightly metallic taste as well. I swear every sip will have a slightly different combination of flavors somehow. If you’re looking for a consistent great tasting rooibos, this would not be that beverage.
In texture, Rest Assured is vibrant and tangy with mostly a heather/lavender-like furry mouthfeel, as well as a lingering zing from the hops. Careful: if you swish this tisane the flavors and textures blend together and become kind of acidic.
In additionally to inspiring somnolence (not just a clever name), I’m thinking Rest Assured possibly has medicinal qualities and would probably be good for fevers (it feels like it’s lowering my blood pressure), but that’s just my wild supposition. I’d recommend just sipping it, maybe with something dry like buttermilk biscuits or crackers.
I’m not sure i personally exactly like it or dislike it necessarily. I will say this though: Rest Assured is easily the most original tisane i’ve ever tasted. ;) Oh, and you should know i’m scratching my temples. This one may incite migraine if you’re sensitive.
